Communication

Communication starts with the mother-child relationship and is normally an unconscious process, but in the case of the educationally handicapped child, the parents will need to give more deliberate encouragement, by keeping a note of what excites him, what appears to interest him, and what causes tears or temper. They should talk to him and sing to him, and make a fuss of him whenever he responds. They should speak his name when they go to him, and use simple, single cue words to accompany actions and activities, like ‘up’, ‘wash’, ‘hands’, ‘toes’, ‘drink’, and so on. The same words should be used for each action and the family as a whole should try to be consistent. Flooding the child with chatter will make it difficult for him to pick out key words.

As he grows and develops, language has to be made necessary in the child’s dealings with his world. Before he can speak he should be encouraged to use sounds to attract attention and to indicate what he wants. Games that require him to make some sounds, such as rhymes and poems, will encourage him to listen as well as to speak. ‘Pop goes the weasel’ is an excellent example, as it cannot be completed until someone says ‘Pop!’. With ingenuity, well-known rhymes and songs can be adapted and new ones invented, and a response should be demanded of him every time. The speech therapist is the primary source of advice in developing the child’s communication skills, and if she does not think he will acquire adequate speech she may suggest teaching the family an appropriate sign language, such as Makaton.
